What To Look For When Buying A Certified Pre-Owned Phone

A certified pre-owned phone should be a phone someone tested, not just a phone someone used. Before you buy one anywhere — from a shop, a marketplace, or a stranger — here's what to check.

Was it actually inspected?

Ask what was tested. If a seller can't tell you what they checked, assume nothing was.

Battery health

On an iPhone, open Settings → Battery → Battery Health. Anything under 80% will need a battery soon. A reputable seller either replaces worn batteries before sale or tells you the number up front.

Is it unlocked?

An unlocked phone works on any carrier. A carrier-locked phone works only on the one it came from. Confirm which one you're buying before you pay, especially if you plan to switch carriers.

Is it really clear to use?

A phone still tied to someone else's Apple ID or Google account is a paperweight. Make sure Find My iPhone or the Google account lock is off and the phone lets you set it up fresh as a new device.

Cosmetic grade vs. working condition

Scratches don't matter much. A cracked screen, a lifting back, or a bent frame do. Grades like "Like New," "Excellent," and "Good" should describe cosmetics honestly — everything should work regardless of grade.

Is there a warranty?
