Phone Fell In Water? Do These 4 Things Immediately

Pool, sink, toilet, a Florida downpour that came out of nowhere. It happens to everyone eventually. What separates a phone that comes back to life from one that doesn't is almost never luck — it's what you do in the next few minutes, and how fast you get it to a bench.

1. Get it out and power it off

Pull it out of the water immediately and shut it down. If it's already off, leave it off. Water alone doesn't kill a phone — electricity moving through wet circuits does. Every second it stays powered, current is finding new paths across the board. Don't tap the screen to "see if it still works."

2. Strip it down

Case off. SIM tray out. Any accessory, off. Anything pressed against the phone is trapping water against the openings you need to drain.

3. Dry the outside — and skip the rice

Wipe it with a soft cloth and tilt it so water can run out of the charging port and speaker grilles. Then, if you have them, grab the little silica gel packets — the "do not eat" packets that come in shoe boxes and electronics packaging. Seal the phone in a bag with a handful of those. Silica gel actively pulls moisture out of the air around the phone. Rice does not; it's a myth that wastes the hours that matter most, and rice dust ends up in the ports.

4. Bring it in — fast

This is the one that decides the outcome. Liquid inside a phone doesn't sit still. It starts corroding the board and connectors within hours, and it keeps spreading until someone physically cleans it out. Two things never to do
